Women's tennis opens Florida trip with loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Sunshine State was a gray place for the Lipscomb women’s tennis team.

Thursday afternoon the Lady Bisons fell 6-1 to North Florida. Lipscomb falls to 10-5 overall, 0-2 in the A-Sun. North Florida is 8-5, 3-0 in the conference.

The Lady Bisons played a competitive doubles point but were unable to take control of it. Hannah Gamage and Dani Kinnen won the only doubles match for Lipscomb with a 7-6 decision at No. 2.

“I thought our doubles play was solid despite losing the point,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said. “Our No. 2 doubles team was down 5-0 and had he mental toughness to come all the way back for the win.

“The No. 1 doubles team on both sides of the net held serves the entire match. Our No. 1 doubles team played a little too conservative in the tie breaker.”

Laura Kent, playing at No. 3 singles, beat Rafaela Gomez 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

“Laura Kent pulled out a great win at No. 3,” Aid said. “Hannah Gamage played fantastic tennis from start to finish.”

The Lady Bisons trip to Florida continues Saturday at Stetson in DeLand.  Due to expected rainy weather the match has been moved up to 10 a.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson, 7-8, 3-0 in the A-Sun, beat Kennesaw State 4-3 Thursday night.

“The depth of our roster needed a quicker start in the first sets,” Aid said. “UNF is one of the better teams in our conference and despite a loss it was a competitive match. Our girls are believing in themselves after the close matches at UNF.”
