PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Lipscomb’s Vika Dzyuba opens play in the 2016 Rivera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship Tuesday afternoon.
Dzyuba will face Ena Shibahara, a freshman from UCLA, who advances to the qualifying round after winning three matches in straight sets in pre-qualifying.
Monday was a practice day.
Three UCLA players have advanced to the championship round in the past three season.
Shibahara is ranked No. 2 by the ITA among freshman and newcomers. Dzyuba is rated 95th.
“Vika has a tough draw,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said.
The first round match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT.
Dzyuba and Denise Buberl lost in double prequalifying after winning their first match. They lost 8-3 to Ashley Lahey and Dzina Milovanovic from Pepperdine in the round of 16 at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Strauss Tennis Center.
“We didn’t capitalize in pressure situations like we did in the first match,” Aid said. “But it was still a good match.”
