SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Obstacles have been many for the Lipscomb women’s tennis team, but once again they overcame a setback for an ASUN Conference win, their first of the season.
Lipscomb, 5-13 overall, 1-1; in the ASUN, traveled to South Carolina to take on the USC Upstate Spartans, 2-15, 0-2; at the University Tennis Center in Spartanburg on Saturday morning. The Lady Bisons won the match 5-2 despite only playing five players. The overall series is tied at 5-5 with Lipscomb winning the past four meetings.
Madeleine Brooks was pulled from the match because of an injury. Brooks forfeited her singles match and her doubles match with teammate Jaclyn Findlay.
“Every single girl was committed to each other,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said. “And even though we had five girls playing, and were down a doubles and a singles point, it took all seven of them to bring the energy and pull each other through.”
Lipscomb dominated the doubles courts. Vika Dzyuba and Denise Buberl competed against the Spartans’ Carol Sigaki and Vale Zarama. Dzyuba and Buberl won the match 6-0.
Hannah Gamage and Thabile Tshatedi took on Filipa Ericson and Taylor Dodd of Upstate. Gamage and Tshatedi won the match 6-3.
The Lady Bison’s success carried over to the singles courts, as the women won 4 out of 6 singles points.
Dzyuba faced her toughest competition this season in Upstate’s Ericson. The two players fought hard throughout their two sets, but ultimately Dzyuba prevailed. Dzyuba won the match 7-5, 6-4.
Gamage took the No. 2 singles position with the absence of Brooks. Gamage defeated Sigaki 6-1, 7-6.
Lipscomb’s Buberl battled Upstate’s Zarama on the third singles court. Zamara won the first set 5-7, but Buberl fought back in the second set winning 7-5. Buberl won in the third set tie breaker 10-5.
Tshatedi played against Eduarda Ferreira and won 6-2, 6-1.
Findlay was not successful in her singles match against Taylor Dodd losing in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
“The girls have had an extremely difficult schedule and have had to really learn how to truly fight because of the schedule,” Aid said. “I don't think our girls have been given enough credit for their work.
“This is the most committed group I have coached. Our staff was so proud of the way our girls came out against Upstate. I am very proud of how hard we fought in an extremely tough situation down a player on the road in a must-win conference match.”
The Lady Bisons take the court again at home against Stetson University on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
