Women's tennis falls 6-1 in ASUN to UNF

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Being outmanned continues to be a problem for a gritty Lipscomb Lady Bisons tennis team

Saturday morning at Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center Lipscomb lost 6-1 to North Florida in an ASUN Conference match.

The Lady Bisons are 5-14. North Florida is 10-7.

Lipscomb competed without Madeleine Brooks for the third straight match. With Brooks being absent, the team did not play the third doubles match or the sixth singles match giving those points to UNF.

“It is hard being down a doubles in this conference,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said.

Vika Dzyuba and Denise Buberl began the doubles play facing off with Luise Intert and Quetzali Vazquez of UNF. Dzyuba and Buberl easily defeated the Ospreys 6-1.

Hannah Gamage and Thabile Tshatedi took the court with Rafaela Gomez and Lucia Montaño on the other side of the net. Gomez and Montaño won the match 6-1.

“We are right there in these matches,” Aid said. “I see this group continue to get better and continue to fight.”

The singles matches were hard fought for both the Bisons and the Ospreys.

Dzyuba and Michelle Valdez were the first singles matchup. Dzyuba and Valdez are both fighting to represent the conference in singles at the national tournament. Winning the match was crucial for both players to secure their position in conference play. Dzyuba won the match in three tough sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Lipscomb’s Hannah Gamage and UNF’s Gomez met on the second line. The match went into a tie-breaker, but Gomez came out on top winning 6-1, 4-6, (10-3).

Buberl took on UNF’s Irina Karangozishvili. Buberl battled for three sets before falling to Karangozishvili 1-6, 7-5, (10-5).

Tshatedi competed against Vazquez in her singles match. Vazquez narrowly won the first set over Tshatedi, but pulled away in the second set. The final score was 6-5, 6-1.

Jaclyn Findlay was defeated by Intert 6-0, 6-0.

“Our girls have not used our situation of a lack of players as an excuse,” Aid said. “Instead they use it for motivation. The way they support each other and see positives in a situation many would see as negative is inspiring.”

The Lady Bisons travel to Fort Myers, Florida on Saturday, April 8 to take on Florida Gulf Coast in an ASUN Conference match.
