Reduced roster remains obstacle for women's tennis

FORT MYERS, Fla.-The Lipscomb Lady Bisons traveled to Florida to take on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a fierce match. The highly ranked Eagles defeated the Bisons 6-1.

“FGCU is a very strong team,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said. “We fought today with five.”

Florida Gulf Coast University has had an extremely successful season in conference and non-conference play. The Eagles are 4-0 in conference play and 12-4 for the overall season. They have won six matches in a row.

The Lady Bisons are 1-3 in conference play and 5-15 in overall matches.

The doubles point went to the Lady Eagles. Vika Dzyuba and Denise Buberl were defeated prematurely for the first time this season by the Eagles’ Julia Ascúa and Julianna Curtis 4-3.

Thabile Tshatedi and Hannah Gamage lost their match due to the clinch format of the match. Tshatedi and Gamage faced off with Bridget Forster and Sara Kelly of FGCU. The Eagles won 6-2.

The Lady Bisons were led by Dzyuba who beat her previously undefeated opponent, Maja Ornberg. They are battling for the top spot in the ASUN conference singles position. Dzyuba won the match 6-7 (3), 6-7 (2).

“This was a big win for Dzyuba,” Aid said.

The rest of the singles matches were unsuccessful for Lipscomb. Gamage faced off with Breana Stampfli of the Eagles. Gamage lost her match 6-1, 6-1.

FGCU’s Ascúa and Buberl competed on the third singles court. Ascúa won the match 6-4, 6-3.

Tshatedi and FGCU’s Laura Falceto-Font battled to a tie-breaker. Falceto-Font took the first set 6-3. Tshatedi came back in the second set 2-6. The tie-breaker went to Falceto-Font 10-7.

Jaclyn Findlay fell to Forster 6-0, 6-0.

“I couldn't be more proud of our attitude and energy,” Aid said. “Our girls continue to fight in adversity and I couldn't be more proud of their character.”

The Lady Bisons will be facing off with Kennesaw State at Lipscomb’s home courts at Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 4 p.m. for their final match before the ASUN Conference tournament.
