FORT MYERS, Fla.-The Lipscomb women’s tennis team’s season ended on Friday afternoon at the 2017 ASUN Championship in Fort Meyers, Florida with a 4-2 loss to Stetson.
“These girls are so young this year and have accomplished so many first for the program from All-Americans, to national rankings, to player of the year,” said Lipscomb head coach Jamie Aid. “They have created the culture of doing what's right, of fighting for each other, and of being a tennis family.”
Aid made some changes to their doubles teams before the tournament. The changes seemed to pay off for Lipscomb as they took the doubles point from Stetson.
Vika Dzyuba and Hannah Gamage easily defeated Stetson’s Arijana Korac and Maja Salibasic 6-2. Denise Buberl and Thabile Tshatedi won their match against Sofía Ferding and Lucie Renault 6-3.
Madeleine Brooks returned to the court with Jaclyn Findlay in their first doubles match as a pair. Stetson’s Danielle Peele and Alexe Viaud won the match with Lipscomb’s new pair by default.
The singles matches did not go as well for the Bisons. Dzyuba won her match against Korac 6-3, 6-0. Unfortunately, the rest of the Bisons struggled in their singles matches.
Brooks made her return to singles competition when she took on Stetson’s Salibasic. The two players dueled for three sets. Salibasic edged out Brooks winning the match 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Lipscomb’s Gamage followed in Brooks’ footsteps. Gamage and Stetson’s Renault battled for three sets. Renault beat Gamage 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Ferding faced off with Buberl. Ferding took the first set 6-1. Buberl rallied back in the second set, but her advances were not enough to hold back Ferding. The final score was 6-1, 6-4.
Tshatedi and the Hatters’ Peele fought for three sets. Peele won the match by default 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 4-1.
Findlay lost her match to Viaud 6-0, 6-0.
“We are very excited for our future and so proud of this current group for building a culture that I know our Lipscomb community will take pride in,” said Aid.
The Bisons do not have a senior on the roster, so all six players will be back next season. The team has become a family throughout this year, so Aid is excited to continue their journey next season.
