Women’s tennis set to open fall season at Western Carolina

Cullowhee, N.C.- The Lipscomb women’s tennis team will open their 2017-18 campaign this weekend by taking part in the Western Carolina University Invitational. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday and will run through Sunday. Other participating schools include host Western Carolina, Presbyterian, Tusculum and Young Harris.

Head coach Jamie Aid is taking the whole roster for the event, although Viktoriya Dzyuba will be held out to avoid reaching her tournament limit. Dzybua was recently invited to the Oracle Masters and the ITA All-Americans, which will both take place outside of Los Angeles later this month.

Aid is excited to have her team healthy and ready to go for the fall season after the team struggled with injuries throughout 2016-17.

“Several players have yet to participate in a fall tournament in their careers,” Aid said. “Maddy Brooks hasn’t had a fall campaign and (Kateryna) Kanyba is really excited to be back after her ACL tear.”

Freshman Kateryna Popova will make her collegiate debut by taking on Western Carolina’s Jordyn King in singles play on Saturday.

“(Popova) hasn’t played a match since last November so she could be eligible to play college tennis, so she’s ready to compete,” Aid said.

The team traveled to North Carolina on Friday to be ready for the tournament on Saturday morning. Day two of the invitational will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday.

“This will be a good tournament to get our feet wet and to see where we are,” Aid said. “It’s won’t be high-pressure.”
