NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Lipscomb women’s tennis players Denise Buberl and Viktoriya Dzyuba are set to travel to California for the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships this weekend.
Dzyuba will compete in the pre-qualifying doubles starting on Saturday, and then the two will team up for the qualifying doubles beginning on Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.
The duo competed at last year’s tournament and had some success, marking Lipscomb’s first-ever appearance in the All-American Championships.
“I think that they’re motivated and want to do very well,” head coach Jamie Aid said. “When we went last year, the experience was completely new. Now they know what to expect.”
Despite having only played one match together, Buberl and Dzyuba defeated a duo from Long Beach State in pre-qualifying doubles. Dzyuba also picked up a victory in singles play over Florida’s Spencer Liang.
With experience comes higher expectations, but Aid said the two athletes won’t be fazed by the big stage.
“This year they had an expectation of going (to the tournament) and more pressure comes with that,” Aid said. “We’re doing everything we can to take the pressure off them so they can just play their game.”
Aid and Dzyuba were in the Los Angeles area last weekend for the Oracle Masters, but returned to Nashville to tend to their responsibilities at Lipscomb.
“(Dzyuba) needed to come back to Nashville for academics and I needed to be here for the team,” Aid said. “The schedule is what it is, and several other schools are dealing with the same (travel circumstances).”
Buberl and Dzyuba will practice on Friday before Dzyuba’s singles quest begins the following day. Draws have yet to be publicly released.
