NASHVILLE, Tenn.- For the Lipscomb women’s tennis team, there’s no place like home. The Bisons stayed in the Music City this weekend due to a shortage of healthy players and the decision paid dividends.
“I thought it was a great way to cap off our fall season,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said. “We were able to play some really good competition – we were the underdog in every match that we played.”
Freshman Kateryna Popova and sophomore Denise Buberl each went a perfect 3-0 in singles play in the June Stewart Invitational at Vanderbilt.
“They did tremendously well,” Aid said of the duo. “Buberl and Popova each had a lot of third sets this weekend and I was happy with their endurance and their focus.”
Thabile Tshatedi also participated in the tournament, which was Lipscomb’s fifth and final event of its fall schedule. Tshatedi went 0-2 in singles play and paired with Popova in doubles, where the Bisons dropped two matches to Princeton.
“Even though they didn’t win, we were happy with what we saw from them as a possible doubles pairing,” Aid said. “That was good to see them play together.”
The rest of the team is currently dealing with nagging injuries, but Aid said that she expects the entire roster to be healthy when the spring season rolls around in January.
“Everybody’s been dealing with little (injuries) – nothing serious,” she said. “We’re looking forward to the offseason and being able to get in good shape.”
Lipscomb will have its final week of in-season tennis this week before dialing back to a smaller schedule between now and the end of the year.
“This is the most difficult spring schedule we’ve ever faced, and I think there’s going to be a lot of third sets,” Aid said. “The break will be a little bit of a breather and allow us to work on our cardio.”
