Two home matches on the docket for women's tennis

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Lipscomb women’s tennis team will enjoy home cooking this weekend after playing four of its first five spring matches on the road.

The Bisons (1-5) are set to host rival Belmont (1-5) for the Battle of the Boulevard on Friday, before taking on future ASUN conference foe North Alabama (1-1) on Sunday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. at Whitworth Indoor Center.

“Playing Belmont is always a fun match,” coach Jamie Aid said. “The girls are feeling great after the matches (last) weekend (in Cincinnati). We’ve dealt with some things, but everyone is getting healthy and buying in to what we’re trying to do.”

The weekend originally included a 3-game slate, but Saturday’s match at Alabama-Birmingham has been postponed due to expected inclement weather. The makeup date for the match with the Blazers has yet to be determined.

Belmont enters Friday’s contest with just one victory – a 4-3 win over North Alabama on Feb. 2. The Bruins are led at the No. 1 singles slot by freshman Maria Plaksina, who is still searching for her first singles win of the season. In the No. 2 spot, freshman Drew Hawkins has picked up three wins in five matches played. Last season, Lipscomb topped the Bruins with a 4-3 victory at Centennial Sportsplex.

North Alabama is fresh off its first victory of the season, having topped Martin-Methodist, 9-0, on Thursday evening. The Lions are in their final season as a member of NCAA Division II, as they will be moving to Division I and the ASUN conference for the 2018-19 season. Junior Claudia Arroyo (1-1) and sophomore Nina Linke (2-0) represent UNA’s top two singles players.

Stay tuned to for a full recap of the action on Sunday night. Updates will also be posted to the team’s Twitter account (@LipscombWTennis).
