Women's tennis to battle NJIT in first round of ASUN tourney

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team is set to face a familiar foe in the first round of the ASUN tournament.

After defeating NJIT by a score of 6-1 in Nashville last week, the two teams are set to meet again Friday at 4 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals at North Florida. The Highlanders are the ASUN's No. 6 seed.

The Bisons (10-11, 4-2 ASUN) are riding a three-match winning streak thanks to victories over Stetson, USC Upstate and NJIT in recent weeks. Lipscomb enters the ASUN tournament as the No. 3 seed – the highest finish in program history.

Freshman Kateryna Popova leads the charge with a 16-2 singles record, making her an ASUN Player of the Year candidate.

Meanwhile, reigning ASUN Player of the Year Viktoriya Dzyuba finished the season with four consecutive singles victories to finish the regular season with a 10-7 record.

The doubles team of Dzyuba and Buberl is 6-1 in the No. 1 spot, while the Bisons are 27-24 in doubles overall.

After opening ASUN play with a 5-2 victory over USC Upstate on March 24, NJIT (8-11, 1-5 ASUN) finished the regular season on a five-match losing streak. Amanda Helminsky leads the Highlanders with an 11-4 singles record. The junior was the lone Highlander to pick up a victory against the Bisons last week, as she took a 6-4, 1-3 victory when Thabile Tshatedi retired. Advaita Saravanan (11-7) and Holly Matson (10-8) have also been solid in singles play.

Updates will be posted on the ASUN tournament central page, as well as the team’s Twitter (@LipscombWTennis). A full recap with results will be available on Friday evening.

Should the Bisons emerge victorious on Friday, the team will extend their season another day. They would take on host North Florida on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. central time.
