NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team has experienced roster depth issues due to several injuries over the last two seasons.
That won’t be the case next season, as coach Jamie Aid officially announced the addition of three new players for the 2018-19 season.
“We’ve really had a hard time with some random injuries the past couple of years,” Aid said. “We have had a lot of talent, but we haven’t had the depth. We’re really excited to build that depth from top to bottom with three new girls.”
Maddox Bandy (Chattanooga, TN), Eleanor Chapman (East Sussex, England) and Diachenko “Liza” Yelyzaveta (Kiev, Ukraine) are each set to join the Bisons and start school in August, which will bring the team’s roster count to nine.
The signing of Bandy marks the first time in two seasons that Lipscomb has carried an American on its roster. The soon-to-be Girls Preparatory School graduate will compete in next week’s TSSAA state singles tournament after defeating Brentwood Academy’s Lauren Hadley Trammell 6-1, 6-3 earlier this month.
“We’re so excited to have Maddox,” Aid said. “We recruit everywhere, so it’s nice to find a local girl that fits our program academically and athletically. She’s hasn’t fully developed yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing how good she’ll become.”
Chapman brings a wealth of experience to the Bisons, having been listed as high as No. 12 in the English junior rankings. She recently had a chance to visit Lipscomb's campus with her family, a rarity for international players.
“With the way we do international recruiting, we’re not always able to always meet in-person (with prospective players),” Aid said. “We do the best we can with video calls, but it was nice to have Eleanor on campus so that she could get a feel for Lipscomb. She’s a really good person and will add a lot to our team on and off the court.”
Yelyzaveta will join Viktoriya Dzyuba, Kateryna Kandyba and Kateryna Popova as the fourth Ukrainian on the Lipscomb roster.
“We’ve had great success with Ukrainians on our team – both athletically and academically,” Aid said. “Liza will come in and have an impact in our lineup. She’s a solid baseline player.”
Aid said she has high expectations for a team that will boast five upperclassmen next season.
“We have a big roster of seniors, so hopefully we’ll see a lot of match maturity,” Aid said. “This is a really close team, so I’m looking for our leaders to quickly welcome these new freshmen and show them our team culture.”
