Women's Tennis makes history in doubles play at ITA Regionals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team had a history-making day on the court Saturday as a pair of duos advanced to the semifinals and finals of doubles play on day three of the ITA Regionals in Chattanooga.

The Lady Bisons top tandem of Kate Popova and Vika Dzyuba earned an 8-4 victory over the 29th-seeded pair out of Memphis (Alisha Reayer and Laura Bente) to move into the semifinals of the 64-team main draw.

They had already taken down another pair from Memphis and the No. 5 seed out of Vanderbilt to get into the semis.

It marks the furthest the Lady Bisons have ever advanced in doubles play of the main draw at the ITA Regionals. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the ITA Nationals at Indian Wells, California.

The semifinal round will get under way Sunday morning in a best-of-3 sets format as Popova and Dzyuba will take on No. 9 seed Carolyn Campana and Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt.

In the 32-team Flight B of doubles play, Thabile Tshatedi and Maddox Bandy took down IUPUI’s Sarah Lounsbury and Gabrielle Ochalik 8-4 in the semifinals to earn a spot in Sunday’s championship match.

Tshatedi and Bandy will put their perfect 3-0 mark on the line against the top seed out of Tennessee – Kylie Duckworth and Lauren Gish.
