Women's Tennis has program-best showing at ITA Regionals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –After five days of action on the courts, Lipscomb women’s tennis wrapped up play at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Monday in Chattanooga.

“This week has been a tremendous five days for us as a program,” Lipscomb head coach Jamie Aid said.  “The entire team posted very impressive results. I’m so proud of each girl in how they competed and represented Lipscomb as we move the program forward.”

The Lady Bisons made history with the best showing in program history in the main doubles draw as Vika Dzyuba and Kate Popova advanced to the championship match, where they ultimately lost to the No. 2 pairing from Vanderbilt in a tiebreaker 7-6(5), 0-6 (3-10).

“Vika and Kate had a wonderful run in a very hard tournament,” Aid said. “But it wasn’t just their match, it was a match for all nine girls that represent this year’s roster. This was a big match with the winner receiving an automatic bid to nationals.

“I think the girls played a tremendous first set and we weren’t able to execute as well in the second. It’s hard to close out matches. Vanderbilt played great tennis and were just better closing out the match today, but I believe Kate and Vika have potential to be a highly ranked doubles team.”

The duo posted a 4-1 record in the 64-team draw after knocking off Cincinnati, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Memphis and No. 5 Vanderbilt along the way.

In singles play, Lipscomb had six of its eight players advance out of the first round. Ninth-seeded Popova and 17th-seeded Dzyuba made it to the round of 32 in the 128-person main draw.

Popova knocked off Ball State’s Rebecca Herrington (6-4, 6-3) before falling to No. 17 Louisville (2-6, 0-6). Dzyuba advanced over ETSU (6-1, 6-3) before her draw came to an end against No. 3 Vanderbilt (5-7, 3-6).

In the 64-person B Flight, freshmen Maddox Bandy and Liza Diachenko won their way into the quarterfinals. Bandy earned victories over Northern Kentucky’s Hannah Watton (6-3, 6-1), Wright State’s Andrea Craciun (6-3, 6-1) and Butler’s Nina Bertino (6-3, 6-2), before ultimately falling to No. 2 Lily Holmes of Chattanooga (1-6, 6-4, 4-6).

After Diachenko earned a bye in the first round, she defeated IUPUI’s Krystal Grubb (6-2, 6-3), Austin Peay’s No. 7 Daniella Morris (1-6, 7-5, 6-4). Her road came to an end against Miami-Ohio’s Melati Devi (6-1, 5-7, 4-6).

The Lady Bisons also found success in doubles B Flight draw as Bandy and Thabile Tshatedi made it to the championship match, while Diachenko and Kate Kandyba advanced to the final eight.

Bandy and Tshatedi beat Northern Kentucky (8-3), Belmont (8-5) and IUPUI (8-7(0) to get into the title match before having to withdraw due to injury.

Diachenko and Kandyba earned victories over Belmont (8-7(4), and Miami-Ohio (8-1) before losing to Vanderbilt/Tennessee 8-3.

In total the Lady Bisons posted a 19-12 match record in the regionals, including an 9-8 mark in singles play and an 10-4 total in doubles.

“This team has a lot of depth, and I am very excited to continue to develop this fall in preparation for the spring,” Aid said.
