Women's Tennis earns historic win on Senior Day

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team wrapped up its home slate and said goodbye to its seniors with arguably one of the biggest wins in program history on Saturday.

The Lady Bisons (15-4, 4-1 ASUN) claimed the early momentum and never looked back in their 5-2 victory over 2-time defending ASUN regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast (8-9, 3-3) at the Huston Marsh Griffith Tennis Center in Nashville.

“As our four seniors leave the home court for the last time they mark two program firsts,” head coach Jamie Aid said. “We beat FGCU and we finished undefeated at home in both indoor and outdoor.”

Lipscomb improved to 10-0 at home this season and 18-2 in its last 20 home matches dating back to the 2017.

In doubles play, the top-ranked duo of Vika Dzyuba and Denise Buberl took a 6-3 victory over FGCU’s Maja Ornberg and Julia Ascua on court one. Then Thabile Tshatedi and Kate Kandyba topped Sofia Perez and Bridget Forster 6-4 at the No. 3 spot for the doubles point.

“The energy started in doubles with a win at No. 1 followed by the senior pairing of Kandyba and Tshatedi,” Aid said.

In singles action, after the Eagles took a point on court six, Dzyuba stormed from behind to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ornberg at the top of the lineup. The Lady Bisons continued its run when senior Madeleine Brooks swept Ascua 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

“Vika Dzyuba remained undefeated in conference play, making some great adjustments against a very good No. 1 for FGCU,” Aid said. “Maddie Brooks also remained undefeated at No. 3.”

Buberl clinched the victory for the purple and gold in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) to bring home her 12th singles win of the season. Freshman Liza Diachenko closed the match with another three-set thriller 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on the fourth line.

Aid and the Lipscomb faithful said their goodbyes to seniors Dzyuba, Brooks, Tshatedi and Kandyba in a prematch ceremony.

“I am very proud of the level of tennis today and couldn’t be more happy for our seniors and these girls,” Aid said.

Lipscomb goes on the road for its final two matches of the regular season. The Lady Bisons will have a big matchup with North Florida at 4 p.m. on Thursday before traveling to Stetson at 10 a.m. Saturday.
