Women's Tennis drops ASUN road match at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team had its winning streak come to an end Thursday evening in Jacksonville as the Lady Bisons fell in defeat 5-2 to North Florida at the UNF Tennis Complex.

The loss dropped Lipscomb’s overall record to 15-5 and 4-2 in ASUN Conference action. The Ospreys improved to 14-7 and 5-1.

For just the second time in league play, the Lady Bisons lost the doubles point. UNF earned a 6-4 win on the top line before shutting out the Lady Bisons 6-0 at three. Madeleine Brooks and Kate Popova were tied 5-5 in their respective match when the point was earned.

UNF parlayed that victory into three straight wins in singles to clinch the team win.

Popova earned the first point for Lipscomb on court two after coming from behind to take down UNF’s Lucia Montano 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Vika Dzyuba followed suit with a win at No. 1 against Rafaela Gomez. She too went three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Dzyuba, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, won her sixth straight singles match to improve to 15-2 on the year.

"We had our opportunities today, starting in doubles by being up and having match points," head coach Jamie Aid said. " Today was a good lesson for our girls on how we approached today versus last weekend against FGCU. Our group went into the match very result-oriented and that will always yield to tight tennis.

"It is a good lesson to have now and not in the conference tournament. I place today on myself not mentally preparing the girls enough to just have fun and play. I gave a little too much leeway to the group in how the match was approached. We are a very mature team with four seniors and we have to recognize our seniors haven’t been in this position."

"UNF has a great team and they played better than us in the pressure points. They deserve the win today," head coach Jamie Aid said. "I am looking forward to another collective match as we play a good Stetson team on Saturday. I am proud of the girls for what they are doing this season and we will very much enjoy the match Saturday."
