Women's Tennis falls in ASUN semis to North Florida

DELAND, Fla. – The best season in program history came to an end Friday morning for women’s tennis in DeLand, Florida as the No. 3 Bisons lost to four-time defending ASUN champion North Florida 4-0 in the semifinals of the conference tournament at Stetson’s Cummings Court.

Lipscomb wrapped up its season 17-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.

The No. 2 Ospreys (16-7) earned the advantage early with the doubles point and never looked back as they advanced to their fifth-straight ASUN Championship Final.

No. 3 pairing Kate Kandyba and Thabile Tshatedi fell 6-1, before a 7-5 defeat from ASUN first teamers Kate Popova and Vika Dzyuba on court one sealed the point for UNF.

The Bisons were unable to pick up and steam in singles as senior and All-ASUN second team selection Madeleine Brooks (6-1) was the only player to win their respective first set.

UNF earned straight-set victories at No. 2, 4 and 6 to clinch the match. Brooks’ match was unfinished at 6-1, 6-6 on court three.

After dropping her first set 6-2, senior Denise Buberl fought back to win set two 6-5 before the match was called.

Dzyuba forced her match into three sets against Rafaela Gomez (3-6, 6-3, 1-2), but was unfinished.

Lipscomb’s defeat made it four times in five seasons against the Ospreys in the ASUN semifinals.

Although the season is over for the team, Vika Dzyuba must await the final rankings to see if she makes the NCAA Tournament in singles. To be eligible, the players must be ranked in the top 125 and a conference player of the year.
