Popova, Buberl advance to doubles semifinal at ITA Regional

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team had another great showing on the court Saturday as the tandem of Kate Popova and Denise Buberl advanced to the semifinals of the doubles draw at the ITA Regionals.

After never having a duo reach the regional semifinals in program history, the Lady Bisons have now done so in consecutive years after Popova and Vika Dzyuba made a run to the finals last season.

Popova and Buberl earned an 8-5 victory over the 9th-seeded pair of identical twins out of Middle Tennessee – Lee and Zani Barnard – to move into the semifinals of the 64-team main draw.

They had already taken down a pair out of Northern Kentucky (8-7(7)) and the No. 3 seed out of Vanderbilt (8-6) to get to Saturday’s showdown.

The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the ITA Nationals at Newport Beach, California in November.

The semifinal round will get under way Sunday at 1:30 p.m. as the Lady Bisons will face the No. 2 pairing of Lesedi Jacobs and Akvile Parazinskaite out of Kentucky.
