Saturday, April 17, 2010The second day of the Vanderbilt Invite Saturday was highlighted by freshman Amanda Twigg’s second school record in as many days. Amanda posted a time of 2:14.30 for 800m, surpassing Ruth Mick’s 2006 school record of 2:15.20.
“It was a very fast race,” coach Bill Taylor said. “Amanda split 63 and held on. That’s a very different race than she has had previously where the first laps have been too slow. She now knows she can run either type of race very successfully. Amanda has had such a terrific freshman season. I’m very happy for her.”
Two more Lipscomb freshmen competed in the women’s 800m as well. Sara Stephens ran 2:21.62 in the fast heat, while Emily Longden won the second heat in 2:18.69, her first time ever under 2:20.
“Sara ran out of gas on the second lap,” Taylor said. “She’ll be fine when she runs it again in a few weeks. Emily keeps getting better and bounced back very well from a rough performance last night in the 1500m. That was great to see!”
Emily wasn’t the only Lipscomb athlete to bounce back from a tough Friday night performance. Ryan Chastain struggled through the second half of his 5000m on Friday. However, on day two he ran 1:53.64 for a new PR in the 800m.
“Ryan had some breathing issues Friday night,” Taylor said. “We’ve had a lot of pollen in the air the last two days here. There was a bit of rain early this morning and it cleared a lot of it out I think.
"We threw Ryan in the 800m in place of a quality workout today. He was in the second heat, led wire to wire, and took about two seconds off his best 800m time ever. That was pretty impressive.”
Also in the men’s 800m, Isaiah Greer ran a new PR of 1:57.06, Cormac Carolan ran a new PR of 1:57.43 and Jonathan Williams ran a new PR of 1:58.56. Aaron Todd just missed his PR with a 2:01.17.
“We had a great day at 800m,” Taylor said. “We are really competing well in the middle distance and distance races right now. I feel like our athletes are figuring this out and are stepping it up. You’ve got to be happy with so many PRs!”
Shelby Marvel led the way in the women’s 3000m with a 10:36.71, her second PR of the meet (1500m last night), for third place. Louisa Van Batavia also earned a new PR in the event with a 10:38.28, finishing right behind. Meredith McFarlin 10:57.87, Caitlin Anderson 11:00.25 and Jenny Randolph 11:09.23 rounded out Lipscomb finishers.
Tim Muller finished second for Lipscomb in the men’s 3000m in 8:58.40, which was also a PR. Ashton Fisher followed in 9:05.18. Jared Carlson ran 9:19.32 and Ben Wright ran 9:21.49.
“I didn’t really know what to expect from the 3000s,” Taylor said. “We doubled back a lot of our athletes in the 800m or the 3000m instead of doing a quality workout, and to get that feel of doubling back in the championship meets. I think it went really well.
“Shelby looked terrific. She ran very smooth and just kept looking stronger each lap. Louisa ran very well too and is reaching a new level. "
Muller has been steadily improving during the outdoor season after missing the entire indoor season.
"I was also very impressed with Tim. He has been improving rapidly in the late season. He missed the whole indoor season with an injury and some of the early outdoor season, but has been working hard and is getting back to where he was for us the past cross country season.”
In the Jumps, Adam Austin earned a second place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6-4. Xavier Conley had a 6-2 leap while Logan Ray finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 43-2.
Alex Jerkins finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 125-7.
Burton Elrod set a new PR in the 100m with a mark of 11.43. Xavier Conley struggled with an injury, finishing 15th in 11.90.
Mike Knox broke the 50-second barrier in the 400m for the second meet in a row, running 49.85. Anika Piorkowski finished 10th in the women’s 400m with a time of 60.98, while Valerie Winkler ran 61.89.
Next up for Lipscomb University Track & Field: Ryan Chastain and Jeff Musick will compete in the prestigious Drake Relays 10,000m on Thursday night. The rest of the team will compete in the Western Kentucky Invite on Saturday, April 24th.
