NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s and women’s track and field squad gets their 2013 indoor season underway at the Ed Temple Classic hosted by Tennessee State University.
The meet will pit eight NCAA Division I universities against each other including Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee State and host TSU.
“We want to get things started right and have a good attitude,” Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor said. “We are not as concerned about getting top marks in the first meet as we are about wanting to see a good effort.
“We are not running any distance or middle distance athletes. It is mostly sprints, jumps and throws. Even though we are not running everybody, the entire team will be there to support one another.”
Taylor points out he is excited to see sophomore Colin Dempster compete in a new event.
“Colin is going to play with the 800 this year,” Taylor said. He ran the 400 last year and some 100 but right off the bat he is going to run the 800 and see where his endurance is.”
Taylor expects to see big things from a duo of sophomore throwers as well.
“Houston Ward and April Terry have made big progress during the offseason and we’ll look to see where they are at.”
Mixing a young team with savvy veterans, Lipscomb looks to see highlights from junior Tucker Peabody and sophomore Brenna Thompson.
“Tucker is always a highlight for us,” Taylor said. “We’ll see where he is at compared to last year after a pretty amazing year of sprinting.”
Thompson looks to kick start her sophomore campaign where she left off from last year. She set the school-record in the 400 with a time of 57.45 in the A-Sun Championships.
The field events start at 8 a.m. with running events slated to begin at 8:30 a.m.
The meet is free and will be located in the Gentry Center on the campus of TSU.
