NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb track and field returns to action on Friday for the Blazer Invite in Birmingham, Ala. The meet is hosted by UAB at the Birmingham Crossplex.
“Last week got the ice broken,” Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor said. “We got to see where we are. We are still really early in the season, both in the indoor season and the broader picture of the entire track and field season.
“We are looking for an effort and toughness. Someone who isn’t quite hitting the times yet, but a guy who just competes like Nelson Scott. The time and marks, they will come if you are training hard and putting it out there, good things will come from that.”
Lipscomb received strong showings from sophomores April Terry and Houston Ward as they picked up Atlantic Sun Conference athletes of the week. Terry crushed the school records in the shot put (12.37m) and weight throw (15.37m) at the Ed Temple Classic last Saturday. Ward picked up a second place finish in the weight throw and third place in the shot put.
“We expect to see the throwers to continue to do well,” Taylor said. “April knocked a lot of distance off the school records and we would like to see how much further she can go. Houston had a great week of practice and he was excited to get going.”
Junior Tucker Peabody took his position at the top of the podium in the 200m in a time of 21.75 seconds while newcomer Gemikal Prude finished third in the high jump with a leap of 1.98m.
Colin Dempster who ran the 800m last week will return to the 400m this week at the Blazer Invite while Brenna Thompson will look to improve on her 400m from last week for the women.
The Blazer Invite will have a field of 30 squads including ETSU and Kennesaw State of the A-Sun. Live results from the meet can be found here.
