MACON, Ga. – The Lipscomb women’s track and field team had a duo named as the Atlantic Sun Conference Track and Field Athlete’s of the Week after their performances last weekend at the Birmingham-Southern Invite. Junior Dani Walker collected her second-straight award while sophomore April Terry earned her first of the outdoor season.
Walker picked up the track athlete of the week after competing in the steeplechase for the first time in her career. Proving she was a natural, Walker ran a school-record 10:32.95 enroute to winning the event. Walker’s time is the top time in the country at this point of the season. Her time was also faster than what it took to qualify for nationals a year ago.
“Dani deserves it,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “She keeps breaking records. It is pretty amazing to go run your first steeplechase of your life and break the school record. She has even potentially qualified for the preliminary round of nationals.”
Terry set two school records on her way to the field athlete of the week. Terry landed two podium finishes after throwing 12.88 meters in the shot put to finish in second place. A heave of 44.27 meters garnered third place honors at the meet.
“April sets the tone for our throwers and field event competitors,” Taylor said. “She keeps launching it out there and we haven’t seen her best yet.”
Walker, a native of Wichita, Kan., earned the sixth weekly award of her career. Terry, a native of Little Rock, Ark., collected the second weekly honor of her career.
The Lipscomb track and field squads will be at two meets this weekend. Part of the distance runners will be in Boulder, Colo., for the Jerry Quiller Classic with the rest of the team in Birmingham, Ala., for the Samford Invite.
