NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb track and field teams will attend a two-day meet this weekend but get the convenience of sleeping in their own beds. The Purple and Gold will be competing in the Vanderbilt Invitational just three miles up the road on Friday and Saturday.
“It is a solid meet,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “Friday evening will be a distance carnival along with some field events and the 200-meter dash.”
This will be the first meet with the full squad in two weeks after only having 21 competitors in competition last week.
“We have gone through a busy stretch,” Taylor said. “With the meet in Nashville and another weekend off next week, it sets us up well. They know what they have to do and I think it will be a big advantage for them.”
The Vanderbilt Invite offers a mixture of competition levels for Lipscomb.
“For some athletes this will be the final time this year to compete,” Taylor said. “For others it is the final opportunity to improve their marks going into the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. Then we have a third group who are trying to hit marks for the NCAA Preliminary Round. So there are different things we are trying to accomplish with different people.”
Split into two regions, the top-48 competitors in the east and the top-48 in the west qualify for the preliminary round. Lipscomb has several athletes with current marks inside the top 48 including Tucker Peabody who ranks 23rd in the 200-meter dash.
“He is getting better and better every week,” Taylor said. “I think he is in the preliminary round. The time he has run has always been in. He is catching his stride with two really great meets in a row.”
Other LU athletes with top marks include Gemikal Prude in the high jump with the 13th best jump in the East Region at 2.15 meters. Dani Walker ranks 26th in the steeple and 30th in the 800-meter run while Peabody also ranks 41st in the 100-meter dash.
After the Vanderbilt Invite, Lipscomb has just one more meet scheduled before the A-Sun Championships, attending the Billy Hayes Invite in Bloomington, Ind., on May 5.
