ATHENS, Georgia – Lipscomb’s track and field athletes wrapped up the regular season at the Georgia Invitational Saturday with one victory and several personal records.
"We had a solid meet today,” said Bill Taylor, director of track and field. “Some good personal records, which are a good sign heading into conference.”
The team used the final meet of the regular season as a tune-up for the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships.
Gemikal Prude proved to be rested and ready for the championships finishing first in the high jump with his leap of 2.15 meters.
Kayla Droessler and Kaitlyn Llewellyn finished third and fourth in the 3000 meters respectively. Droessler crossed the line in 10:13.14 while Llewellyn finished in 10:36.52.
Droessler’s time earned her a new personal record in the event.
The Georgia Invitational provided the opportunity for other Bisons to set new personal records as well.
Juan Gonzalez set a personal record in the 800 meters after posting his time of 3:56.59.
Multiple personal records were set in the 1500 meters including DA Lowry (3:58.09), Jared Wingerter (4:00.25), Minna Fields (4:42.77), and Barbara Lee Ball in the (4:44.81).
Other personal bests posted were Colin Dempster in the 100 meters (10.72), Aaron Beckwith in the pole vault (4.60 meters), Jalen Thompson in the triple jump (13.59 meters), Annika Backlund in the javelin (26.28 meters), Joe Sanderson in the javelin (41.93 meters), and Abby Newby in the javelin (29.91 meters).
Freshman Jazmyne McGill snagged two new personal records Saturday in both the shot put (12.12 meters) and the hammer throw (39.43 meters).
Madi Talbert picked up third in the 1500 meters with her time of 4:32.02.
The men’s 4x400-meter relay team closed out the running events with a second-place finish. Kenny Smith, Brian Gentry, Nelson Scott, and Dempster each contributed to the final time of 3:13.56.
"The spirit of the team was good,” Taylor said. “I think we are ready to step it up in a week. All in all it was a worthwhile competition for us.”
The team begins postseason competition next weekend as they head to Jacksonville, Florida for the A-Sun Outdoor Championships scheduled for May 16-17.
