Monday, March 22, 2010The Lipscomb men’s and women’s track & field teams won a combined seven events at the Austin Peay Spring Fling on Saturday.
For the women Priya Pappu won the 800m in 2:20.69, while Taylor Mason posted a huge new PR in the javelin, winning with a toss of 35.05m.
On the men’s side Isaiah Greer won the 1500m with a new PR time of 3:59.32. Burton Elrod won the 110 high hurdles in a time of 17.37. Adam Austin had his best jump of the season, winning the high jump with a leap of 1.98m, while Logan Ray won the 400IH with a time of 1:00.05 and the triple jump with a 13.10m jump.
The Women’s 4x400m A Relay of Amanda Twigg, Emily Longden, Priya Pappu, and Sara Stephens, also set a new outdoor school record with a time of 4:00.35. All four are freshmen.
“This was a low key meet at the end of our Spring Break,” coach Bill Taylor said. “It was the smallest meet of the year and it was hard to know how the team would react after being gone for a week. I was very happy with our performances. In addition to the event wins, we had other great performances as well.
“I really liked the effort in the middle distance races. The women’s 1500m was fun, with two freshmen women breaking 4:50 (Priya Pappu and Emily Longden) and a fifth girl breaking 5:00 for our team (Caitlin Anderson). Shelby Marvel is right there too!”
Taylor also had praise for the members of his men’s team.
“Isaiah ran a very exciting 1500m race and showed a lot of guts,” Taylor said. “He had the lead for the most of the last lap I think, then was passed with about 120 meters to go. It looked like it was over, but he came back and fought for every inch. Cormac Carolan has really been doing well too with PRs in every distance this year. He’s being aggressive in his racing and it’s paying off.
“Then Alex Jerkins gets a huge PR in the shot, Taylor gets a huge PR in the javelin and Adam wins the high jump with a great effort. “
After a few days off Taylor was pleased with the aggressive way both of his teams performed.
“That’s what we saw a lot of, fight and toughness,” Taylor said. “Across the board I was pleased with the way our men and women fought. I could really just read down the list of our athletes at this meet and talk about how each of them put it on the line and fought hard. I really can’t ask for anything more from them.”
The Bisons and Lady Bisons will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., next week for the University of Alabama Relays on March 27-28.
