MACON, Ga. – For a tune-up before the conference championships, the Lipscomb track and field teams did pretty well last weekend.
The Lady Bisons swept the weekly Atlantic Sun awards, with sophomore Katie Bunker (800m run) and freshman April Terry (throws) taking track and field honors, respectively. Freshman thrower Houston Ward was named men’s field athlete of the week.
Bunker won the 800m run at last weekend’s Tennessee State Boston Moon Classic with a personal-best 2:14.28s mark, better than her next closest competitor by more than half a second. The award is her first career weekly A-Sun honor.
Bunker enters this weekend’s A-Sun championships ranked third in the conference in the 1500m run and seventh in the 800m event.
Terry was runner-up in the hammer throw (school-record 44.25m; 145’ 2”) and shot put (12.13m; 39’ 9.75”) at the Boston Moon, extending her school hammer throw record by nearly five feet. She enters the weekend ranked sixth in the hammer throw and seventh in the shot put, and leads all conference freshmen in both events.
This is the second weekly award for Terry in her freshman season. She won the Feb. 15 weekly award after breaking the school shot put record at the Hoosier Hills Classic.
Ward won the shot put with a 13.80m (45’ 3.50”) toss and followed it up with a third-place hammer throw mark of 40.17m (131’ 9”) at TSU. Ward enters this weekend’s championships ranking fourth in the discus, fifth in the shot put and sixth in the hammer throw.
This is Ward’s first weekly A-Sun award and the first for a Lipscomb field athlete since Alex Jerkins in 2010.
North Florida’s Cameron Dickerson earned the men’s track honor this week.
The Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships begin Friday at North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
