NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the old adage of “success breeds success” the Lipscomb women’s track and field team is looking for a breakout year during the indoor season.
Utilizing a second straight Atlantic Sun Conference cross country championship, the Lady Bisons are poised to carry the momentum into the indoor track and field season.
“Cross country along with track and field go hand-in-hand,” head coach Bill Taylor said. “Winning becomes a habit and we want to keep the momentum going in as many areas as possible.
“We had a lot of records fall last season and I think our team is ready to explode this season.”
Sophomore Brenna Thompson capped the indoor season last year with a school record 57.45 time in the 400m.
“Brenna, along with veteran Sara Stephens, will be competing for all-conference in the 400,” Taylor said. “Brenna finished fourth in the outdoor season while Sara is a wily veteran with the program.”
Junior Dani Walker, the school-record holder in the mile run and 800m, will look to continue her dominance after earning All-South Region honors in the cross country season.
Walker, along with sophomore Kendra Lobley, earned all-conference accolades in the mile run last indoor season.
Thrower April Terry was leaned on as a freshman last season. As a sophomore, she has both the experience and the practice to have a breakout year in the shot put and the weight throw. She holds the school record in both.
“April will be able to come in right away and be vying for indoor events championships,” throwing coach Luke Syverson said. “Already through practice this year, she is throwing farther than her school records from last year.”
Junior Anna Belner looks to increase her school-record 3.05m in the pole vault. She set that mark at the conference championship last season.
A goal that has been highlighted by the women’s squad this year is winning the 4X400 relay. Last year’s runners in the outdoor season achieved a program-best second place finish in the A-Sun Championships. The combination of Walker, Thompson and Stephens returns, after losing Valerie Winkler to graduation.
“They have seen what it feels like to win the event from watching the men,” sprints coach Marcus Evans said. “They want to be able to experience victory in the event and help the program to its first victory in the 4X4.”
The Bisons first meet will be at the Ed Temple Classic, hosted by Tennessee State University on Jan. 5. They travel to the Blazer Invite in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 11. Partial squads will compete in those two meets before ramping up the entire team for the Niswonger Invite in Johnson City, Tenn., on Jan. 18 and 19.
Heading back to Tennessee State, Lipscomb will compete in the TSU Invite on Feb. 2. A pair of meets on Feb. 8 and 9 will have the Bisons at the Samford Invite in Birmingham and at the Indiana Hoosiers Hills Invite in Bloomington, Ind.
The A-Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships takes place on the campus of ETSU on Feb. 22 and 23 in Johnson City.
