NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As of late the Lipscomb track and field team members have struggled to reach their full potential in competition.
The group is still showing signs of fatigue, but Saturday’s events did see somewhat better results.
"Saturday was alright,” said Bill Taylor, director of track and field. “Overall we've hit a rough patch like I haven't really seen before in my coaching career.
“I don't really know what it is, but I hope we snap out of it soon. I think focusing on finals and having next weekend off will help a lot.”
The group taking part in the Mt. Sac Relays seemed to suffer the most over the weekend.
“It's pretty disappointing to send athletes out to one of the top college meets in the nation and perform poorly,” Taylor said. “We need to learn and approach meets like that differently in the future.
"The rest of the team was at Kentucky. Distance is still struggling right now, just not our usual selves.
“I think Juan Gonzalez’s win in the 5000 meters and Madi Talbert’s personal record (and heat win) in the 800 meters were the two distance highlights.”
Gonzalez scooped up his victory with a time of 14:39.83 while Talbert’s time of 2:16.84 contributed to her new personal record.
Several others picked up personal records in Kentucky to expand the day’s highlights.
"Molly Crawford and Kenny Smith ran new personal records in the 400 meters,” Taylor said. “Abbey McMurray ran a personal record in the 100 meters, Nelson Scott ran one in the 400-meter hurdles and Jesse Rowe threw a personal best in the hammer. Those are really our highlights.”
The team showed signs of improvement from Friday, however, they still have plenty of room for more.
The Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships are lurking around the corner and the team ‘s readiness is questionable.
"I don't feel ready for A-Sun,” Taylor said. “Fortunately it is still weeks away.
“We have work to do, some of it physical, more of it psychological. I believe we will get it soon."
