Benton Reed begins his fourth year with Lipscomb’s cross country and track and field coaching staff. He is an assistant coach for distance.

Since joining the staff, Reed has helped elevate the men’s program in several areas. They have won three cross country Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. In the past four cross country seasons, 22 runners earned all-conference honors. Two student-athletes earned all-region honors in cross-country as well.

On the distance side of the men’s track program, Reed has guided his athletes to break 22 school records in the indoor and outdoor seasons. Including 7 individual conference champions. At the 2017 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships, Ryan Speer led a one-two-three sweep for the Bison in the 800m run. Juan Gonzalez won the 1500 and the 5000. Juan also qualified for the Outdoor National Championship Prelim in the 10,000.

In the last four years, 32 other distance performances have earned a podium finish for all-conference honors at the championship meets.

Reed also helped coach the women’s distance programs in the track season of 2016, including Madi Talbert as she competed in the U.S. Olympic Trails in the 3000m steeplechase.

Before Lipscomb, Reed served as an assistant coach at The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tenn. During his time with the Tigers, the women’s cross country team matched the highest finish in school history in conference. He also coached men and women in events ranging from the 800m to the 10,000m.

As an athlete Reed competed for Lipscomb, and was a member of Coach Bill Taylor’s first recruiting class in 2008. He served as a team captain for three years.

He also served on the Spiritual Direction Team through the years and was one of the leaders on the team mission trip to Belize in 2011 and to the Dominican Republic in 2014.

He graduated from Lipscomb in 2012 with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Corporate Management and in May of 2015 he completed his MBA.

Reed holds a USTFCCCA Program Management & Technical Coaching Certification and Endurance Event Specialist Certification.

A native of Scottsboro, Ala., he is married to a former Lipscomb distance runner, Emily (Longden) Reed. They live in Nashville with their dog, Dakota.
