Bisons open tennis season with win over UTC
The Bisons’ tennis team kicked off the spring season with a win Friday night over UT-Chattanooga. The Bisons pulled out the hard-fought win by just one match, taking the victory by a 4-3 score.

"The men were relentless,” assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “Every single match, singles and doubles, was a fight to the finish. I am proud of the guys, and this is something we can build on for the rest of the year.”

The Bisons took an early 1-0 lead on the Mocs by picking up the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches.

Oliver Strecker, a second semester transfer from Auburn, and senior Joe McArdle posted a win for the Bisons at the No. 1 doubles spot. Strecker and McArdle defeated Trent Cobb and Jackson Tresnan in a tiebreaker 9-8 (2).

Sophomores Tanner Brown and Colby Shaw sealed the doubles point for Lipscomb with a 9-8 (4) win at No. 2 over Roberto Viera and Chris Smith.

The Bisons sole doubles loss came at No. 3 where freshman David Salazar and senior Mario Hernandez fell to Stephen Crofford and Sam Parfitt 8-6.

With a 1-0 lead, the Bisons went on to pick up three singles wins to secure the victory.

Strecker posted a win at No. 1 singles with a 7-6(0), 6-1 win over Cobb. UTC battled back with a win at No. 2 where Brown was defeated by UTC’s Viera in a three setter, falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

Salazar added another win for the Bisons at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 solid win over Tresnan. Smith picked up another win for UTC with their second three-set victory, this win coming at No. 4 over Shaw 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

McArdle defeated Crofford at No. 5 6-3, 7-6(4), while Hernandez fell at No. 6 to William Disterdick 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

With the Bisons’ three singles wins, they took the match 4-3 over UTC. The three losses all came in three sets, proving the Bisons’ perseverance to set the tone for the rest of the season.

The Bisons will be back in action Saturday when they take on No. 39-ranked Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.
