Bisons open A-Sun play with match win over Mercer
The Bisons pulled out an emotional 4-3 win over Atlantic Sun foe Mercer in their conference opener Friday afternoon at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center. The Bisons league win was their first since March 19, 2010 when they defeated Florida Gulf Coast 4-3.

After falling behind early in the match, the Bisons showed tremendous heart and fought back to take home the victory.

"The guys showed a ton of resolve after losing the doubles point in dramatic fashion,” men’s assistant coach Mike Sherman said. “They absolutely played their tails off the entire match and showed what it's like to be relentless our there. This win is a definite confidence builder for the rest of the conference season."

At No. 1, freshman Oliver Strecker and senior Joe McArdle stomped Mercer’s Peter Tauchner and Evandro Rosindo 8-0.

Sophomore Colby Shaw and freshman Miguel Cortez fell at No. 2 to Pierre Tafelski and David Barton in a tiebreaker, falling 9-8 (1). At No. 3, sophomore Tanner Brown and freshman David Salazar were defeated 8-6 by Guilherme Frias and Fernando Armendaris.

With a 1-0 deficit, the Bisons headed into singles play.

At No. 2, junior Chad Pierron fell to Tauchner 6-4, 6-3 to deepened the Bisons hole to a 2-0 deficit before Strecker posted a solid win at No. 1 over Tafelski 6-3, 6-3 to put the Bisons on the board 2-1.

Brown tied the score up at 2-2 with a three set win at No. 4, defeating Rosindo 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3).

The Bisons fell behind once again with a loss at No. 6. Shaw was defeated by Barton 6-3, 6-3 to give Mercer a 3-2 lead over the Bisons.

Cortez tied the score once again at 3-3 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Frias.

The even match boiled down to Salazar in a third set tiebreaker. After suffering through full body cramps throughout the match, Salazar posted a three set win over Armendaris 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3.

While Salazar collapsed to the court following the match and received medical treatment for his cramps the Bisons joined their teammate on court to congratulate the freshman on his crucial win and celebrate their first conference win of the season.

The Bisons will hit the courts again on Saturday to face A-Sun foe Kennesaw State at Richland Country Club at 6 p.m. Results:
