Steven Mason enters his sixth season of working with the Lipscomb men’s and women’s cross country/track and field programs. In June of 2016, he joined the coaching staff full-time as an assistant coach to women’s distance. Along with coaching, his primary responsibilities include strength and conditioning for the entire men’s and women’s programs, as well as the team performance therapist.

Prior to joining the cross country/track and field staff on a full-time basis, Mason served in the strength and conditioning department as a strength coach from 2011 to 2016.  He worked primarily with the women’s soccer team, as well as men’s and women’s cross country/track and field programs.

In college, Mason competed as a NCAA Division I Track and Field athlete for Lipscomb, running the 200m, 400m, and 800m events, as well as throwing javelin. During his collegiate career, he served three years as a team captain. He also served on the team spiritual formation committee, initiating and leading the first team athletic mission trip to inner city Los Angeles in May of 2010. Since then, he has formed, directed and led eight consecutive team mission trips to Belize, Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic.

Mason graduated from Lipscomb in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.  Upon graduating, he immediately began working as a graduate assistant strength coach for the athletic weight room. During those two years, he completed his master’s degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science through the Kinesiology Department at Lipscomb.

Coach Mason has been an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) since 2012 and received his distinction as a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) in 2014. During his time as a graduate assistant strength coach, he was selected as one of five candidates for the NSCA’s Assistantship Program.

While working as a strength coach, Mason became increasingly interested in human movement and saw a huge need to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and performance. In 2013, he became certified in Functional Movement Systems (FMS), a system of corrective screens and assessments that identifies movement dysfunction as the result of poor motor control, muscle imbalance, and asymmetries. He is also a certified Movement and Mobility Specialist through the MobilityWod Institute.

After completing his master’s degree, Mason enrolled in a sports massage therapy program. He became a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in 2016 and specializes in sports massage, cupping, Kinesio/Rock taping, and Fascial Stretch Therapy. He is also full body certified in Active Release Techniques, often considered the gold standard in soft tissue therapy. He currently travels with the team as a coach and performance therapist, treating athletes before and after their competitive events.

Coach Mason currently resides in Nashville with his wife Louisa (former Lipscomb distance runner and current volunteer assistant).
