Softball Falls to North Texas in Final Game of the Weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. – Lipscomb softball wrapped up their weekend in Arizona on Sunday with a matchup against North Texas. Despite a homer in the second inning from Lauren Higginbotham, the Bisons fell 12-2 to the Mean Green in their last game at the Candrea Classic.

The Bisons got off to a slow start in the first inning as Elle Smith drew a walk in the squad's first at-bat and the next three batter struck out swinging, but the Mean Green quickly brought the heat in their own turn at the plate. With Macey Ogle in the circle to start the game for the Bisons, North Texas loaded the bases with a single, a walk, and one batter hit by a pitch until the Mean Green drew another walk and scored the first run of the match.

North Texas struck once more with a double down the right field line that evaded the Lipscomb defense long enough for two more Mean Green runners to cross home plate. The Purple and Gold sent Ryleigh Sapp into the circle for Ogle and though North Texas crossed the plate twice more with a double, Sapp put the next two batters away in short order to end the inning.

Lipscomb's squad stepped up to the plate ready to battle as the second inning began and after Josey Polk was grounded out, Elise Shewmaker kept her cool and drew a walk to claim first place. Lauren Higginbotham entered the batter's box and drilled a home run out past the left field wall to send Shewmaker around home before crossing the plate herself, cutting the North Texas lead from five down to three.

The Mean Green responded to the challenge and claimed their sixth run of the game early in the bottom of the second on a throwing error from the Bisons' defense. They scored twice more on a single late in the inning as a throwing error gave two North Texas runners time to make it across home plate.

The Bisons saw their first three batters all grounded out in the top of the third inning, but the Lipscomb defense stood tall against the Mean Green to hold off a further North Texas lead through the third frame.

Lipscomb's offense saw more action in the fourth inning with Shewmaker once more finding first base with a single and Higginbotham earning her own spot on base moments later as Shewmaker was thrown out at second. The Bisons soon loaded the bases as a grounding error allowed Lauren Griffith to reach first base and Macyn Kirby drew a walk from the Mean Green shortly after, but an aggressive at-bat from Smith in which she struck out swinging cut the Purple and Gold's time at the plate short.

North Texas kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the fourth, claiming two runs with a double and a walk before logging two more on a fielding error to go up 12-2 at the end of the fourth frame.

Lipscomb's squad saw three more ground outs at the top of the fifth inning and the game was called with North Texas' 12-2 lead.
