Softball Drops Two in First Day of 2024 Season

TUCSON, Ariz. – Lipscomb softball kicked off their 2024 season with their first day of competition of the 2024 season at the Candrea Classic, hosted by Arizona University. The Bisons faced off with the Northern Colorado Bears the Arizona Wildcats and fell 10-2 in their first game of the weekend to the Bears and fell 8-0 to the Wildcats later that night.

GAME 1: NORTHERN COLORADO 10, LIPSCOMB 2
After a rainy start to the tournament on Thursday, the Bisons' Friday start time was delayed an hour in Tucson and once things got under way, the Bears quickly established their dominance early in the contest. The two squads held steady through the first inning with both teams getting on base but ultimately failing to score in the opening frame.

The Bears found their stride in the second inning, logging five runs in the top of the second and forcing a pitching change from the Bisons as Courtney Sauer stepped into the circle for the Purple and Gold to relieve Laine Barefoot. Lipscomb's squad went three up and three down so the Bears entered the third frame with a sizeable lead.

Northern Colorado kept their foot down on the gas; however, and recorded a RBI in the top of the third to increase their lead to 6-0. The Bisons fought back with a strong showing in the bottom of the third as they loaded the bases and logged their first run of the season with a single from Kaylyn Belfield to send Briyana Wright around to home plate. The Bears' defense closed ranks to end the inning 6-1 in Northern Colorado's favor.

The Bears continued to press their advantage in the next two innings with a run in the top of the fourth and a trio of runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 10-1.  Macyn Kirby made her way around to home plate late in the fifth inning, but the Bisons ended the inning just one more run and the Bears claimed the 10-2 victory.

GAME TWO: ARIZONA 8, LIPSCOMB 0
The Bisons' hung with the Wildcats through the first inning in their second game of the day – allowing just one Arizona batter to make it to first place. The second frame saw the Bisons go three up and three down in the top of the inning while the Wildcats made the most of their own turn at the plate and logged three runs with a trio of RBIs.

Lipscomb's squad failed to respond in the top of the third and Arizona found the plate once more in the bottom of the third with a RBI off a double to left field. The Wildcats sent the Bisons away from the plate with just three batters up in the top of the fourth and added two more runs to their own tally with a home run midway through their turn at the plate.

Arizona held the Bisons off once more as the fifth frame got under way with a fly out, strike out, and ground out in quick succession. Macey Ogle stepped into the circle for the Bisons in the bottom of the fifth and the Wildcats soon put two runners on base with a pair of walks.

The Wildcats scored their seventh run of the game with a single that sent a runner around to home for an RBI. A wild pitch gave Arizona their eighth run of the game and ended the game with an 8-0 lead for the Wildcats.
