Baseball Wins Seventh Straight ASUN Series with 9-3 Sunday Victory over Bellarmine

NASHVILLE - Lipscomb baseball earned a Mother's Day win to clinch their final home weekend series with a 9-3 victory over Bellarmine at Ken Dugan Field Sunday afternoon.

The Bisons extended their series win streak to seven straight with one more three-game set still to play before postseason play gets underway. The win also secured the Bisons a spot in the ASUN Championship hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Florida, from May 21-26, allowing them to defend their title from a year ago.

Bellarmine scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a wild pitch to go up 1-0. After two scoreless innings for the Bisons offense, Lipscomb evened the score on a wild pitch by the Knights in the third.

Lipscomb created some separation in the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line by Alex Vergara, followed by an RBI single to left field from Mason Lundgrin, to take a 4-1 advantage.

Trace Willhoite gave the Bisons a cushion in the run column, connecting on the 52nd home run of his career, a three-run shot to left field to score three of Lipscomb's five runs of the inning. The other two came on a Will Lee two-run bomb, his sixth of the year, to make it 9-1 after six.

The Knights scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the seven and another on a ground out to short, but stud relief pitcher Collin Witzke closed out the final two innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout in the six batters he faced to close out the game and the series in the Bisons' favor.

POSTGAME NOTES:

  • The win clinched Lipscomb a shot in the ASUN Championships starting on May 21 in DeLand, Florida.
  • Will Lee led the Bisons with two hits, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Hayden Frank, starting pitcher for the Bisons, went for six innings, allowing just four hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
  • Frank's eight strikeouts were the most by any Lipscomb pitcher this season.
