Fortel no-hits No. 14 Ole Miss as Softball sweeps Friday

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Lipscomb softball team could not have gotten off to a better start to the 2018 season on Friday at the Sand Dollar Classic.

After taking down Georgia Tech in the first game of a doubleheader, the Lady Bisons (2-0) knocked off No. 14 Ole Miss thanks to a no hitter from new Bison Jordan Fortel.

“What a start,” Lipscomb softball head coach Kristin Ryman said. “We’ve talked a lot with this team about taking that next step as a program. We’ve asked them to talk as a team about what does that look like in action every day.

“It’s one thing to talk about wanting to be better and wanting to take that next step, and it’s a different thing to actually go out and do it. There’s just been a different work ethic about this group, even early in the fall.”

In her first-ever start in the Purple and Gold, Fortel struck out four batters and only allowed one walk on the way to a no-hit shutout.

“In her first start for the team, Jordan follows up Mandy’s 17-strikeout performance with a no-hitter against the number 14 team in the country,” Ryman said.

“I think those two girls are capable of being really good for us this year. Jordan only struck out four, but I think that says a lot about her ability to keep it in the park.”

Lipscomb beat two “Power Five” schools through all of last season, a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh in the Troy Tournament and a 4-1 win over Louisville on the road.

The last time the Lady Bisons defeated an opponent ranked this high was during the 2014 season when they beat No. 14 Baylor 1-0 at the Getterman Classic.

“We’re not intimidated by anybody,” Ryman said. “Those days are long gone. I think we stepped on the field today just wanting to play our game and almost prove a point that we belong and that we know we’ve got the talent to do this.

“We left today with a lot of good feelings about this team. They really came out and demonstrated much of what we’ve been focusing on in the preseason, which is a lot easier said than done.”

Lipscomb scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. The action started when sophomore Hannah Devault singled to short. Senior Caitlin Plocheck then advanced Devault to second on a sac bunt.

Sophomore Peyton Ward also singled to short, sending Devault to third. Junior Kayla Green walked in the next at-bat, and then Ward reached home on a wild pitch to give Lipscomb the first score of the game.

Freshman Caitlin Turner then broke the game open with a single up the middle that scored Green and Ward, giving the Lady Bisons a 3-0 lead.

“I think we made some nice defensive plays behind them when we needed to,” Ryman said. “Kayla Green robbed a home run early in the game, and we turned a key double play later in the game, so credit to our entire defense.”

Game One: Lipscomb 1 Georgia Tech 0

The Lipscomb softball team started off the 2018 campaign strong as the Lady Bisons took down Georgia Tech 1-0 in eight innings in the opening game of the Sand Dollar Classic.

Junior pitcher Mandy Jordan threw a career-high 17 strikeouts in a two-hit shutout to lead the way for the Purple and Gold.

“It was really neat to see Mandy go out and have that kind of performance right off the bat,” Ryman said. “A two-hitter with 17 strikeouts, you can’t really ask for more than that to start off the year.”

Lipscomb scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior Sarah Higgins doubled to left field, sending fellow junior Khayla Green in for the first score of the game.

Freshman Caitlin Turner went notched two hits and a HBP to get on base three times in her first appearance in the Purple and Gold.

NEXT UP: The Lady Bisons will play another doubleheader tomorrow at the Sand Dollar Classic. They are set to take on Florida A&M at 10 in the morning, followed by a no one matchup with Lamar.

“It’s a great start, but it’s exactly that, a start,” Ryman said. “While we’re really excited with the results from today, we have to come out and be just as hungry tomorrow.”
