Fortel's ninth-inning blast gives softball win over Houston

HOUSTON – Jordan Fortel has already won a game with her arm this season for the Lipscomb softball team, but tonight she won one with her bat as the Lady Bisons beat Houston 3-2 on Friday night thanks to a ninth-inning home run from the junior.

Lipscomb (12-5) split their two games for the day at the Cougar Classic after dropping an afternoon contest against Iowa State.

Junior Sarah Higgins started off the ninth with a sacrifice bunt, advancing fellow junior Graysen Gladden to third. Gladden at been place on second to begin the inning due to the international tiebreaker rule.

Fortel then blasted a two-run home run to center field to put the Lady Bisons ahead 3-1.

Mandy Jordan went the distance for Lipscomb on the mound, tossing seven strikeouts and allowing just four hits and two runs in the win. The junior improves to a perfect 8-0 on the year.

After seven scoreless innings, Lipscomb broke the tie in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Peyton Ward reached home due to a throwing error cause on junior Destinee Brewer’s sacrifice bunt attempt.

The Cougars tied it up in the bottom of the eighth Arielle James singled to center, scoring Mariah Garcia.

Houston added a second run in the bottom of the ninth on a passed ball, but it was not enough as the Lady Bisons hung on for the win.

  • Junior Khayla Green reached base for the ninth straight game thanks to a hit in the third inning. Fortel’s home run extended her on base streak to six games.
  • Senior Abby Fenichel’s streak of 13 consecutive games reaching base came to an end in the win.
  • Savannah Heebner earned the loss for Houston. She is now 7-2 on the season.
