Three Lady Bisons finish in double-figures as WBB falls to Upstate

NASHVILLE – Despite three Lady Bisons scoring in double-figures, the Lipscomb (3-18, 0-6) women’s basketball fell to USC Upstate (13-8, 4-2) 81-54 at Allen Arena Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Loren Cagle, in her first game back after a two-game absence, paced the Purple and Gold with 12 points, five assists, and two steals.

“She was very solid,” Lipscomb women’s basketball coach Greg Brown said. “To sit out like she did and then to come back with five assists and no turnovers is impressive. I can’t say enough about that.

“The biggest thing about Lo doesn’t show up in the stats. We’ve heard her voice so much more. I know their frustrated. We’re all frustrated, but there is growth.  We’ve seen growth in every single player. Hearing her voice today was really good. Seeing her communicate shows a lot of maturity for her.”

Sophomore Riley Northway added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while junior Alex Banks also nabbed 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

Lipscomb managed to cut the Spartans’ lead down to single-digits towards the end of the first half and again in the third quarter, but was not able to hold off the Upstate attack in the fourth.

“We talked about how there were going to be runs both ways during the game,” Brown said. “And that if you start a run, you need to be able to answer a run. Those two spots were good runs, but we have to make open shots and take care of the ball to handle their runs. That’s where we’ve had some problems.”

Senior Brittany Starling led the Spartans with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

  • Four other Spartans finished in double-figures: Kristen Dickerson (13), Travonda Haddock (12), Tamera Thorpe (12), and Raven Jefferson (10).
  • The Lady Bisons shot 7-26 from three-point range, while Upstate finished 6-20 from behind the arc.
  • The two teams notched an equal amount of assists (15) and steals (6).
  • The Spartans out-rebounded Lipscomb 48-26.

UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will be making their first trip to NJIT with the matchup set for Thursday at 6 p.m. followed by another date with the Spartans a week from today.

“There are some things that Upstate did against the zone that we’ll be able to work on,” Brown said. “We’ll be able to change some stuff defensively. But, now they have a point of reference as well.

“At this point in conference, there’s not going to be any secrets and it’s not like there’s anything tricky that’s going to happen. It comes down to simple execution, awareness, communication, and making hustle plays. Those are the things we will continue to talk about and work on in practice.”
