FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lipscomb softball clinched their first victory of the 2023 season on Friday morning with a win over FAU, before stumbling against Boston College in the later game, to open the FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bisons posted a 4-2 win in game one and dropped a 13-2 defeat in game two.
GAME ONE | LIPSCOMB – 4, FAU – 2
Lipscomb opened the scoring in game one in the top of the third inning as
Elise Shewmaker singled to right field that scored
Maci Cunconan from second base to give the Bisons an early 1-0 lead. After
Presley Leebrick hit a lead-off triple to open the fourth inning,
Kamrie Rich sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Leebrick and extend the lead to 2-0.
Katelyn Belding continue to build on the momentum as she hit her second career homerun to push the Bisons' lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
FAU cut into the deficit with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame before
Kaylyn Belfield singled up the middle to score Shewmaker from second to finish off the scoring for Lipscomb.
Emily Yakubowski (1-1) earned the victory for the Bisons in the circle in game one, giving up only two earned runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Laine Barefoot picked up her first save of the season, only allowing one hit in three innings of relief.
FAU's Summer Clark and Lynn Gardner combined to give up four earned runs on six hits in 7 innings in the circle.
Leebrick paced the Bisons by going 2 for 3 from the dish with a runs scored, while Belfield, Belding, Cunconan, and Shewmaker all registered hits in the opening game.
GAME TWO | Boston College – 13, Lipscomb – 2
After a scoreless first inning, Lipscomb took an early lead in the top of the second inning as
Meghan Kline doubled to center field that sent both
Jack Busch and
Katelyn Belding home to give the Bisons an early lead.
Boston College responded by tallying six runs in the second inning and seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to clinch the non-conference victory.
Kate Peters (0-2) was credited with the loss in the circle in the second game, allowing only one earned run on five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Barefoot and
Brinkley Kita combined to surrender two earned runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
Boston College's Susannah Anderson and Halie Pappion gave up only two runs on two hits in the circle for Boston College.
Leebrick and Kline both registered a hit in the later game to pace the Bisons.
